In the Muromachi era the power of the shogunate fell, and its power moved to the "kanrei (=major provincial governor who support the shogun)" families.

Then, the power moved to the daimyos, local governors, and again it moved further from the daimyos to the vassals after that.

This time is called the Era of"Gekokujo (=overthrow of established authority)".

This trend became the freedom of a popular status, and improvement,

It developed industries and the working class people improved their daily life.

The people who were engaged in production or circulation were called "shokunin (=craftsman)," etc. in addition to the farmer.

And the figures on which they lived was drawn on various picture rolls published at that time.

Also in the literary field, "uta-awase" a play of composing songs, etc. was taken up, and the popular feelings became the subject matter.

"Northeast-in of craftsman song play" and "Tsuruoka Hosei-kai (=meeting) craftsman song play" were edited in the Kamakura era about the middle of the13th century.

"No. 32 craftsman song play" and "No. 71 craftsman song play" were edited aropund the16th century first in the Muromachi era.

The figures of people, who do not belong to the samurai class or the Imperial Court, were drawn on each picture rolls.

The peddler in the photo wears a soft "eboshi" headgear, a linen" tsutsu-sode" garment, a " kukuri-bakama" , a pair of "kyahan" protectors and "waraji" straw sandals for legs.

He carries two "kago" baskets which contains merchandizes on the shoulder, maintaining the balance with a "ninai-bo" bar.
